Meghalaya Assembly new site at Upper Shillong
Shillong, Jun 27 (UNI) Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo today informed the House that the state government has handed over 35.3 acres of land for the construction of a new assembly secretariat building in Upper Shillong.
The Speaker, also the Chairman of the High Power Committee for selecting the site of the new assembly secretariat building, told the members that the land, belonging to the state agriculture and horticulture departments, was handed over on June 14.
Mr Danggo recalled that the House had adopted a resolution by voice vote in the last session to set up a new assembly building in Upper Shillong area after members of the House opposed the construction of the Assembly secretariat at Mawdiandiang area, the proposed Shillong satellite township.
The construction of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly secretariat was necessitated following an inferno on January 9, 2001. Since then, the assembly was functioning in the state auditorium.
