Meghalaya-Asom border issue taken up at the highest level, Dr Roy

Shillong, Jun 27 (UNI) The ruling Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government today said the border issue with Asom concerning Block I and II bordering Karbi Anglong was taken up at the highest level to defuse the situation.

Winding up the discussion on the budget in the State Assembly, Finance Minister Dr Donkupar Roy said that prior to 1951 the territory of Khasi pnar peole was in Khasi hills but it was taken away against the will of the people.

He said the issue was taken up with Asom at the highest level and a solution was yet to be worked out. The solution could be found only with the intervention of the Union governmnedt, he observed.

Participating in the debate legislator M Suchiang said the plight of the people living in block I and II was very deplorable and often UPDS ultras harrassed the Khasi Pnar people.

He suggested a joint police patrolling with reinforcment in those areas could restore confidence among the people.
