Bangalore, June 27 (UNI) Indian-born astronaut Kalpana Chawla's birth anniversary will be celebrated as 'Daughter's Day' and a discussion with the theme 'Daughters do us proud' will be organised on July one by the Public Relations Council of India (PRCI) here to commemorate the anniversary of the astronaut, killed in a space shuttle crash in 2003.

''Daughter's Day will be a time to remember the achievements of the girl child. Against all odds, women have overcome prejudices and other obstacles and reached glorious heights both at careers and as home makers. We believe that there is an emergent need to encourage and foster development of girl child at par,'' PRCI Bangalore Chapter Secretary C G Jayant said in a release here today.

Speakers from the country and abroad would address the gathering.

Kalpana Chawla, born in Karnal, went on to become an astronaut in NASA after earning a doctoral degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado. She died when space shuttle Columbia crashed just 16 minutes before its scheduled landing on February one, 2003.
