Goa to relax ban on fishing for motorised canoes from July 15

Panaji, June 27 (UNI) The Goa government has decided to relax the fishing ban on motorised canoes July 15.

Fisheries Minister Joaquim Alemao said the state government plans to promulgate an ordinance and later move an amendement to the Fisheries Act to specify the fishing ban period.

He said the fishing ban period is from June 10 to July 30 for trawlers, while it will be curtailed by 15 days for 36 feet-long motorised canoes, which are fitted with 10 horsepower motor engine.

However, the ban will continue for the trawlers till July 30.

Mr Alemao said a decision to this effect was taken at a joint meeting of the trawler-owners and the traditional fisherfolk in order to bring unity among them during the ban period.

After studying the ban period in various coastal states, the government has decided to relax it in Goa, a department official added.
