Cholera cases in Delhi mount to 503

New Delhi, June 27 (UNI) As many as 34 cases of cholera were reported in the week ending June 23, taking the total number of cases to 503 this year.

Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri informed this after chairing a meeting on 'Water and Vector Borne Diseases' today.

Senior officers from Health Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Jal Board and the Railways were present in the meeting.

Out of the total, 150 cases were reported from unauthorised colonies, 86 from urbanised villages, 80 from JJ clusters and slums, 81 from regularised colonies, eight from re-settlement colonies, 73 from other states, four from areas under the Railways, six cases from NDMC and 15 cases were 'untraced'.

The Health Minister said in the current week, 17,826 blood slides were collected and 11,133 houses were sprayed. In the capital, 1,69,688 houses were inspected for domestic breeding out of which 682 houses were found positive for breeding. During Anti-Malaria operations 675 legal notices were issued and 201 cases were launched for prosecution.

Dr Shastri said as preventive measures during this week, total 1844 water samples were tested by MCD staff out of which 42 were found unfit. Under Joint Water Testing with Delhi Jal Board, total 1,040 samples were tested out of which nine were found unfit.

He said during this week, 11,86,380 chlorine tablets and 7,072 ORS packets were distributed in the capital. As a health education measure, 30,128 handbills, 1,141 posters and 3,502 stickers were distributed among the people in Delhi.

The Delhi Health Minister said under Food Hygiene Raids (in the week upto June 23), a total of 90 raids were conducted in which 26,690 kg unwholesome food and 28,785 kg of substandard ice were seized.

He said 1027 water trolleys were checked, action was taken against 179 water trolleys, 27 sugarcane crushers, 261 'rehris' (vendors) and 868 other items were seized and 380 people were prosecuted.
