Cape Town band to herald South Afica's biggest show in 2010

Jahannesburg, Jun 27 (UNI) Popular Cape Town band 'Freshlyground' will herald South Africa's march to the 2010 FIFA World Cup when they perform at the handing over ceremony in Berlin on July 7.

The band will perform with other South African legends Johnny Clegg and Sibongile Khumalo in a concert near the Brandeburg Gate in Berlin two day's before the final after an official handover ceremony in the presence of South Africa President Thabo Mbeki, 'Cape Argus' newspaper reported today.

''The band is very proud to be representing South Africa. It's a great honour,'' band manager Sevi Spanoudi said.

Band members include Zolani Mahola (lead singer), Josh Hawks (bass), Simon Attwell (wind instruments), Peter Cohen (drums), Kyla-Rose Smith (violin), Julio ''Gugs'' Sigauque (acoustic guitar) and Aron Turest Swartz (keyboard).

The seven-member band was formed in 2002 and, after the 2003 debut of their first album, Jika Jika, quickly became a national favourite.

With their second album 'Nomvula' having gone multi-platinum in South Africa, the band will also use the opportunity to test their popularity overseas with a three-country European tour, besides showcasing African talent in anticipation of the football fever in the continent.
