British school student tops Cambridge International A Levels

New Delhi, June 27 (UNI) An 18-year-old student from the British School here has topped the Cambridge International A level examination.

Chathika Weerasuriya achieved A grades in four Cambridge International A Level subjects-- biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics.

He has also won a 1,000 pound cash prize for being the 2005 top male A Level student in India.

Chathika collected his prize and certificate from Ms Sarah Maughan, CIE's Deputy Director, International Curriculum and Development Division at Cambridge.

''Congratulations to Chathika for attaining excellent exam results. Chathika's school, teachers and parents must be extremely proud of his achievement. CIE wishes him every further academic success,'' Ms Maughan said.

Currently on his gap year, Chathika was an observer in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. He was placed in a small research laboratory to observe any experiments that were carried out.

In October, he plans to study Medicine at in UK.

Chathika said, ''Cambridge International A Levels are recognised all over the world and definitely helped me to secure a place at a UK university.

After I complete my degree in Medicine, I hope to work in Sri Lanka, where I am originally from." Chathika is originally from Colombo, Sri Lanka, and he studied at Ananda College in Colombo before completing his Cambridge International A Levels in India.

Other high-achievers were recognised at a special ceremony in India, Kirsten Joy Meyer, from Hebron School, was awarded a prize for 2005 top female at Cambridge International A Level in India, and Serena Sydia Anne Kern, also from Hebron School, the prize for 2005 top student at Cambridge IGCSE in India.
