Asom BJP flays Centre on fuel price hike issue

Guwahati, Jun 27 (UNI) The Asom BJP today flayed the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for rise in prices of fuel and essentials.

Talking to reporters here, BJP state president Indramoni Bora said the incumbent Union government had only increased the price of fuel whenever there had been rise in its international market rates but never announced a reduction when international prices go down.

BJP leader and former Legislator Bimalangshu Roy, also addressing the press meet, pointed out that 33 per cent rise in petrol prices had been recorded in the first two years of the present Central government.

He said, '' The present UPA government has announced hike in petrol prices eight times during the past two years with the prices up by Rs 12 since they assumed power. '' Stating that 60 per cent of price of petrol was went to the government coffers as various taxes, Mr Roy maintained that the Centre could ease the burden on the common people by relaxing these taxes to a certain level.

He also said the BJP had already approached the Supreme Court on the issue of appointment of Parliamentary Secretaries in the state.

The Foreigners' (Tribunal) Act issue had also been taken up at the Apex court by the party, he added.

Mr Bora announced the schedule for the party's state committee election with the process slated to begin from July 6 with the induction of new members and will be over by October 31 with election of new state president.

He also stressed the need for unification of non-Congress powers and said the BJP would take the initiative in this regard.
