Suicide attack in S Lanka targets top army officer
Colombo, June 26 : A suicide attack targeting a vehicle of a senior Sri Lanka Military officer at Pannipitiya, approximately 18 km east of Colombo on the Thalawattugoda-Kottawa road, occurred this morning, military sources said.
''An explosion took place in the vicinity of the Pannipitiya junction around 0800 hrs this morning. The suicide explosion is believed to be an assassination bid on a senior officer of the Sri Lankan Army,'' military sources said here.
Early reports from the scene say that the targeted motor vehicle is ablaze and the injured had been rushed to the nearby Kalubowila hospital in Dehiwela.
Special Police teams and the Army bomb disposal squads have rushed to the spot and have cordoned off the area. Further details are awaited.
Meanwhile, a report from Reuters adds that General Paramy Kulathunga and two soldiers have been killed in the suspected Tamil Tiger suicide attack.
