Chennai, Jun 26 (UNI) In the next two years, taxis, autos and buses in Tamil Nadu might run on CNG cylinders if the promises of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora are any indication.

Speaking at a function got up to dedicate the Chennai-Tiruchi- Madurai petroleum product pipeline of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) here, he said a town gas supply system on the lines of Delhi and Mumbai would be introduced in Chennai in the next two years.

Responding to Union Minister Dayanadhi Maran's plea to take steps to enable autos, buses and taxis to run on CNG to prevent pollution, Mr Deora said the Centre had formed Mahanagar Gas Supply Corporation to convert vehicles to run on CNGs in Mumbai and Delhi.

''No such corporation exists in Tamil Nadu. We will have one in the State in the next two years. In the next two years, I want Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who inaugurated the pipeline project today, to inaugurate that also', he added.

Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Mr Maran stressed the need for operating vehicles with CNG as there would be 30 per cent savings on cost in petrol and 40 per cent savings on diesel.
