Candidate murder: Person surrenders before police

Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, June 26 (UNI) Claiming to be involved in the murder of Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Co-option Member and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constitutency (ZPTC) Mandal Rebel Candidate K Ilaiah at Gudur early today, a person surrendered before police.

Police here said K Swamy surrendered at the Subedari Police Station in Hanmakonda claiming he was one of those involved in the murder.

Meanwhile, Mr Ilaiah's relatives and followers threw shoes and sand on the State Irrigation Minister P Laxmaiah who came to Narsampet Hospital, where the body was shifted for post-mortem, to console the bereaved family.

State Social Welfare Minister Redya Naik and other Congress leaders also visited the hospital.

Mr Ilaiah had come to Gudur yesterday for campaigning and was staying at the Congress office when some persons barged in and killed him.

Irate followers of the deceased leader attacked Gudur Police Station injuring a police official and setting ablaze a two-wheeler.

Police clamped Sec 144 in Gudur where police had to resort to lathicharge and firing in the air to control violence.

However, the situation was now under control, police said.
