BHEL wins contract from Power Grid Co. in B'desh

New Delhi, Jun 26: State-owned BHEL today bagged a Rs 55 crore contract from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh for setting up 230 kV substations for an ADB-funded project.

Outbidding Chinese, Malaysian and other Indian companies, BHEL has won the contract for the supply and installation of a 230 kV substation at Baghabari Power Plant and extension of a 230 kV substation at Ishurdi in Bangladesh.

''This is the first order for BHEL for substations in Bangladesh,'' a company spokesman said here today.

BHEL's scope of work in the project includes design, supply, erection, civil construction and commissioning of the substation at Baghabari and expansion of the Ishurdi substation.

Earlier, BHEL had successfully executed several contracts in Bangladesh including the turnkey execution of a 100 MW Gas Turbine-based power plant at Baghabari.

BHEL is also targeting more such projects in this region, as it perceives Bangladesh as a potential market, the spokesman said.

BHEL has identified overseas business as a major thrust area. The company has achieved significant successes during the fiscal 2005-06 and is poised to achieve a quantum growth in its export business by consolidation in the existing markets, widening its export base through expansion of existing basket of products and services, and entering new markets.

During the last financial year (2005-06), BHEL registered highest-ever physical export orders of Rs 3,348 crore-- a six fold increase over the previous year. For the first time, export orders contributed 18 per cent to the company's total order booking during 2005-06.
