SNDP demands job reservations in pvt. sector

Alappuzha, Jun 25 (UNI) The Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) yogam, representing the dominant Ehava caste, today demanded job reservations for depressed castes in the private sector.

The general body meeting of the SNDP, held at Cherthala near here today, also flayed the anti-reservation protests held in capital New Delhi and elsewhere against the proposed reservation of seats in higher educational institutions.

Reservations were not a question of charity or generosity, but a legitimate right of the backward castes, oppressed by centuries of discrimination, SNDP general secretary Velapally Natesan told reporters after the meeting.

He said the general body meeting, by another resolution, welcomed the Kerala State Government demand that the identification of minority communities be left to the state governments.

Reacting to the remarks made by Nair Service Society (NSS) general secretary P K Narayana Paniker yesterday that the issue of ties with the SNDP was a closed chapter, Mr Natesan said that the NSS was angry with the SNDP as the latter had not supported its demand that only brahmins be made temple priests.

Saying that several smaller, village-level units also were not supportive of the NSS general secretary's views, Mr Natesan said that he would mobilise these units in SNDP's bid to forge larger unity of the majority community.
