Indian mining industries lack technology

Hyderabad, Jun 25 (UNI) The productivity in Indian mines was much below the standards prevailing in developed countries and the industry was suffering from problems like technology backwardness and high labour intensive operations, Chairman and Managing Director of National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) B Ramesh Kumar said today.

Distributing the Indira Gandhi Memorial National Awards for excellence in Indian Industry on the sidelines of a National Seminar on 'Environmental Pollution and its impact on Human Life- Preventive Measures' organised by a national magazine here, he said absorption of new technololgy, implementation of automation and computerisation were important for the mineral industry to survive, grow and to compete with international players in the globalised and liberalised era.

On the measures regarding environmental management and pollution control he said the governments had come out with certain Acts to check Water pollution, air pollution, environment protection and forest conservation.

He said the industries must incorporate the concept of environment protection and conservation into their project and development philosophy.

Mr Kumar said in the last ten years the country had undergone massive industrialisation to cope with the requirement of ever increasing urban population.

He said though there was an increase in implementation of environmental measures, still we have miles to go to achieve a pollution free environment.

He said increasing awareness on environment protection and conservation among the mining industry had culminated in the incorporation of environment impact assessment, environmental management plan and land reclamation schemes right from the conceptual stage of mining projects.
