Corporate bigwigs get Rotary Honours

Ahmedabad, June 25 (UNI) Six bigwigs of the corporate world including EXIM bank's Chairman T C Venkat Subramanium, HDFC Managing Director K K Mistry and UTI Asset Management's chief U K Sinha, were today presented the Rotary Awards for Corporate Excellence at a function in the IIM, Ahmedabad campus here.

The other recipients were Union Bank of India's Chairman M V Nair, Motif's CEO Kaushal Mehta and Varun Shipping's MD Arun Mehta.

Addressing the gathering, IIM-A director Bakul Dholakia said despite all its achievements on the economic growth front, India still lagged behind on human development parameters. ''There is still a high presence of poverty (25 per cent). That means one in every four Indian is below the poverty line. Literacy rate is about 60 per cent, two out of every five Indians cannot read or write.

Infant mortality figures are pathetic too.'' He said the government can not be expected to deliver everything and corporate houses should come forward to dispense with their responsibility. ''All these big corporate achievers must have a distinctly identifiable human face.'' Speaking on the occasion, Mr Venkat Subramanium said the impact of borderless trade has been different for different countries.

''There is a need for alternative activities in rural areas. Benefits of globalisation must flow into the villages and the EXIM bank works with NGOs and Self-Help groups to achieve this objective.'' MORE UNI MMG PM DKS RAI1810
