'Nepal army must be silent on political issues'
Kathmandu, Jun 25: Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan, who is also the acting Prime Minister, has said that the Nepali Army (NA) shouldn't have commented on remarks by CPN (Maoist) Chairman Prachanda.
"The army shouldn't raise political issues. The government is there for raising political issues," media reported Sherchan as saying.
"As officiating Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, I inquired about the matter with the defence secretary. A letter has been sent to the army requiring it to keep silent," he said.
Nepal Army spokesman Brigadier General Nepal Bhushan Chand objected to the statement of Prachand terming it "misleading comments" during a press conference at the prime minister's official residence at Baluwatar a week ago.
Maoists Chairman Prachanda had said Nepali Army was good for nothing except "murdering people and raping Nepali women."
