Yet another bypolls in Mizoram
Aizawl, Jun 23 (UNI) After the recent byelections in two constituencies in December, Mizoram will again go for another polls in Chawngte consituency, following the resignation of the ruling MLA.
R M Chakma resigned as MLA from Chawngte constituency following the Office-of-Profit controversy.
The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) are gearing up for the Chawngte bypolls, which would be conducted shortly.
The removal of the Article 4 of the Mizoram Legislature Members (Removal of Disqualification) Act, which permitted MLAs to hold MLA post and Mara District Council post at the same time, had forced Chakma to resign on May 9.
Accepting the resignation, speaker Lalchamliana informed the Election Commission that the consituency was vacant.
Congress sources said that Congress candidate Nirupam Chakma, the first Mizoram state MLA from Chawngte consituency, would contest the bypolls.
He was elected uncontested in the 1987 assembly elections and remained in the seat until he lost it to MNF candidate R M Chakma in the 2003 polls.
