Aizawl, Jun 23 : Representatives of the various churches in the state and non-governmental organisations formed the Mizoram People's Forum (MPF) yesterday.

A meeting chaired by the Mizoram Presbyterian Church (MPC), the largest church group in the state, synod moderator Rev.Chanchinmawia in which 25 persons from various organisations participated moved that the MPF be formed so as to bring about good governance, peace and harmony, socio-economic development and freedom in the state.

A statement from the Presbyterian church also added that the motive behind the formation of the MPF was mainly the deterioting politics in the state and that the environment as envisaged by the India Constitution and the electoral laws and systems could prevail in the state.

''Churches and NGOs had tried to change the way political power was misused and had succeeded to some extent in the past. However, the use of money in elections had increased to an extent that corruption has flared up in the state. In pursuance of the Mizoram Presbyterian Church's decision to steer politics in the right direction, the Church's Synod Executive Committee had discussed the problems with other churches and prominent NGOs which resulted in the formation of the Mizoram People's Forum,'' the statement said.

Members of other churches along with members of the Central Young Mizo Association, the largest NGO in the state, Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl, the women apex body, and Mizoram Upa Pawl, the elders association are also office bearers in the forum.
