Mysore, June 23 (UNI) A critically ill 45-day-old girl baby has undergone a life-saving angioplasty procedure at Vikram Hospital and Heart Care Centre here, perhaps for the first time in Karnataka.

Hospital Managing Director Dr Vikram told newspersons here today that the baby from Somwarpet in Kodagu district was born with 90 per cent narrowing of the aorta, the main artery supplying blood to the entire body. In medical terms the anomaly was called 'Coarctation of Aorta', due to which the baby was developing progressive heart failure and was at a high risk of sudden cardiac arrest and death.

Since birth, the baby had difficulty in breast feeding, suffered from continuous breathlessness and poor weight gain.

Dr Arun Srinivas, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, who performed the angioplasty, said coarctation of aorta was diagnosed by ECG and colour doppler study and early correction of the defect was advised to prevent further deterioration of the baby's condition.

Angioplasty for coaractation of aorta was a technically challenging and rarely performed procedure even in paediatric cardiac centres abroad. Due to the delicate nature of the tissues in the new born and the high risk of complications, most hospitals do not undertake the procedure and surgical repair was instead preferred. But in this case, the baby was too critical and not fit for surgical procedure, he said.

The baby was now recovering at the hospital.
