Food processing facility inaugurated at TNAU

Coimbatore, Jun 23 (UNI) A food processing facility with state-of-the-art equipment for processing and packaging fruit juices, pulp, concentrates and powder was inaugurated at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here today.

The Rs 1.50 crore facility was set up with the sponsorship of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through MC GILL University under a five-year project of ''Consolidation of Food Security in South India''.

Earlier, talking to newspersons TNAU Vice-Chancellor C Ramasamy said the project was in operation in three South Indian universities which includes TNAU, University of Agricultural Science, Bangalore and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad.

He said the programme intends to strengthen South India's capacity for development in post harvest technology and food processing with an aim to promote rural development.

He said the programme would provide employment opportunities for the poor and rural women.
