Jaipur, June 22 : Rajasthan has bagged the UNESCO Confucius award 2006 for its innovative literacy mission.

The state's Directorate of Literacy and Continuing Education will share the award with four other nations.

UNESCO has praised the state's literacy mission for its outstanding performance for the last one decade which included 15-day educational camps for women on subjects like vaccination, sanitation, child care, family planning and formation of self-help groups.

Rajasthan will be the only state to be given the award along with countries like Cuba, Turkey, Pakistan and Morocco. The award will be given on September 8 on International Literacy Day.

Education Minister Ghyanshayam Tiwari said that UNESCO has praised Rajasthan that in spite of adverse circumstances like drought and famine, the state has been able to conduct its campaigns for spreading education, especially among women, leading to women empowerment and gender sensitisation.
