No alarming increase in suicide by personnel: JJ

Teethwal, Line of Control (LoC), Jun 22: Army Chief General J J Singh today sought to downplay the recent increase in suicide cases in the armed forces, saying there is no alarming spurt in such incidents this year as compared to past.

''There is no alarming increase in suicide cases or such a trend among the Army personnel. Going by the analysis and study, the number of such incidents is almost same as compared to previous years,'' Gen Singh told journalists here after inagurating the Teethwal model village.

He said several corrective measures have been taken to check such incidents.

''We have taken the required action to check cases of suicide among the defence personnel. Wherever the corrective measures were needed, we have taken those. It is a continuous effort,'' the Army Chief added.

Gen Singh said significant steps have also been taken to relieve the Army personnel of stress and strain.
