Nine convicts in Best Bakery case file appeal in HC

Mumbai, June 22 (UNI) Nine people convicted in the Best Bakery case today filed an appeal before the Bombay High Court, challenging their conviction awarded to them by a special court here which was conducting the retrial on the directives of the apex court.

The appeal, filed by the lawyers of the accused, will come up for hearing its due course.

The nine accused are Jagdish Chunnilal, Dinesh Phoolchand Rajbahar, Suresh Devji, Rajubhai Dhamirbhai, Pankaj V, Sanjay Ratilal Thakkar, Bahadursingh, Shanabhai Baria and Shailas Tadvi were convicted by the special court on February 24 this year to various terms including life sentence and fine.

The accused were convicted under the various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and various other acts.

In their appeal, the accused persons contented that they were convicted wrongly by the special court and the court had not taken into consideration the concrete evidences favouring the accused.

The appeal made to the court prayed to set aside the order passed by the special court and grant them acqittal.

The Best Bakery incident occurred on March 1, 2003, after the communal riots in Gujarat. In the incident, total 14 people died when a mob attacked the bakery during the communal riots in Gujarat, which was the fallout of the torching of S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express.
