N Railway Tughlakabad-Diesel Shed gets OHSAS-18001 certification

New Delhi, June 22 (UNI) The Tughlakabad Diesel Shed of the Northern Railway was today awarded the OHSAS-18001 Certification, making it the first Diesel Shed over the Indian Railway to be certified.

The certification was recieved by the General Manager, Northern Railway V N Mathur from the Chairman, Quality Assurance, Kvalitet Veritas in a function at the Northern Railway Headquarters here.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mathur said Occupational Health and Safety is one of the key factor that has a bearing on productivity, growth and industrial relations of any organisation.

''It is a matter of pride that Northern Railway Tughlakabad Diesel Shed is the first Diesel Shed over Indian Railway to be certified with OHSAS-18001,''he said.

He, however, added that this certification was not an end in itself but it served as a means to ensure safety and health of Railwaymen in order to improve their productivity. In this context, he said that other units on the Northern Railway would also aim towards achieving this certification in the near future.

Mr Mathur said the area of occupational health and safety is well established in developed economies as it is a statutory requirement.

However with growing awareness sooner or later implementation of OH&S standards is bound to become a statutory binding requirement in India also.
