Indo-Thai trade cooperation discussed

Kochi, Jun 22: A delegation of the Thai commerce ministry has expressed interest in promoting trade relations with India in the light of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed in 2003.

The team, headed by Inspector General Thawatchai Sophastienphong, visited the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry here yesterday for an interactive session on promotion of investment and trade between India and Thailand, a chamber release said today.

Chamber president Balagopal B Pai said since the food processing and agro-industries in Thailand were well developed, these sectors offer opportunities for joint ventures in Kerala.

The traditional items being exported from Kerala to Thailand include cashew kernels, coir mats, seafood, handicrafts, tea, spices and spice products.

Mr Thawatchai Sophastienphong said Thailand wished to explore the trade opportunities with India. In accordance with the FTA, tariff reduction was granted in respect of 82 items.

The other members of the Thai delegation were senior trade officers Pithya Boonying and Suwapat Chamsai, trade officers Chai Sankavez and Krisda Lipikorn and deputy counsul general (Chennai) Prakob Panjacharoensiri.
