HC orders conversion of contempt proceedings

Chennai, Jun 22 (UNI) Madras High Court today ordered the conversion of Suo Motu contempt Proceedings to Suo Motu writ petition, against former Madras High Court Advocates Association President S Prabhakaran, for conducting a dharna in the court premises, supporting 27 per cent reservation for OBC in higher institutions.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Mr Justice D Murugesan directed the Registry to correct the title and treat it as writ petition and make appropriate correction in the records.

When the case came up for hearing, the Bench said in their order they had stated that the matter was to be treated as writ petition.

But it was titled as suo motu contempt. It was a mistake by the office.

We only said the letter of advocate G Rajendran had to be treated as suo motu writ petition. Yesterday also there was some notice and agitation and it was about the atrocities of Tamils in Sri Lanka, the Bench pointed out and gave the above direction.
