Four persons convicted under NPDS Act
Shillong, Jun 21 (UNI) A special Court in Meghalaya has convicted an evangelist and three persons to more than 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
One of the convict's Arun Kanungo soon after hearing the special Court Justice S R Sen's verdict attempted to commit suicide in the Court premises by consuming Phenyl, police said adding that Kanungo is now undergoing treatment in a hospital here.
In a press statement issued here today, Deputy Commissioner of Customs Division, Shillong, G M Kamei said Yusihey Yobin, a 36-year old cleric, is originally from Vijaynagar; Arunachal Pradesh was sent to 13 years of jail for possessing heroin. Yobin's brother-in-law Lisihey Ngwazah, Arun Kanungo and Raju Premji were awarded 10-year imprisonment.
Mr Kamei said the Court also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on all four failing which they will have to stay in prison for one more year.
The Customs sleuth and State's police Special Operation Team on March 19, 2003, arrested all the four for possessing 389 grams of high quality heroin.
