Cabinet halts export of pulses with immediate effect

New Delhi, June 22: The Cabinet Committee on Prices today decided to stop with immediate effect the export of pulses to meet the demand in the domestic market.

Briefing mediapersons, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said that the government has asked the nodal agency to import pulses to meet the demand supply gap.

''Small quantity of pulses was also being exported and the two kinds of pulses export will be halted with immediate effect,'' he said.

Mr Chidambaram also said decision to import adequate quantity of wheat was taken and some has even already come. Bids for the remaining required portion have been finalised and decision will be taken soon.

The private sector has also been allowed to import wheat and details for the purpose will be announced later.

For import of sugar, Mr Chidambaram said a Tariff Rate and Quota Pricing will be decided later by the end of the current season and the beginning of next sugar season. He said the CCP has spent a lot of time on issue price of three primary articles which are showing rising trends. Wheat, pulses and sugar are driving the prices.
