Bhambri sisters bit dust, Rushmi retires, Indian challenge over

New Delhi, June 22 (UNI) In a day of disaster for the local favourites, top seed Ankita Bhambri, sister Sanaa and third seed Rushmi Chakravarthi fell by the wayside as Indian challenge came to a crashing end in the 10,000 dollar ITF Women's tennis tournament at the DLAT Complex here today.

Seventh seeded Chinese Chun-Mel Ji caused the biggest upset of the day when she upstaged Davis Cupper Ankita 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinal match.

It was worse with her sister and fifth seeded Sanaa who proved no match for fourth seeded Jing Ren as the Chinese toyed with her and dropped just two games on her way to a facile 6-0, 6-2 win.

Indian challenge was over with Rushmi Chakravarthi's retirement, when she was trailing 2-6 against Chinese qualifier Jing Jing Lu.

In the other quarterfinal match, Indonesian Lavinia Tananta overcame a first set dficit to edge out sixth seeded compatriot Sandy Gumulya 2-6,6-2, 6-2.

In the women's doubles, top seeds Sanaa Bhambri and Archana Venkataraghavan got walk over from injured Rushmi Chakravarthi and Megha Vakaria and they will take on the Wei Ping Lee-Jing Jing Lu pair in the final after the Singapore-Chinese duo beat the Indonesia pair of Suzanne Anggarkusum and Vivien Silfany Tony 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinals.
