16 new judges join Calcutta High Court

Kolkata, Jun 22 (UNI) As many as 16 new judges joined Calcutta High Court today, taking its total strength to 45.

The new judges were sworn in by Chief Justice of the High Court V S Sirpurkar.

The total sanctioned strength of judges of the High Court is 50.

The judges are Mr Debasish Kargupta, Ms Nadira Patherya, Mr Asim Kumar Ray, Mr Biswanath Samaddar, Mr Dipankar Dutta, Mr Sanjeeb Banerjee, Mr Prabuddha Shankar Banerjee, Mr Tapan Mukherjee, Mr Arunabha Basu, Mr Kalidas Mukherjee, Mr Manik Mohan Sirkar, Mr Rudrenda Nath Banerjee, Mr Tapas Kumar Giri, Mr Kishore Kumar Prasad, Mr Partha Sakha Dutta and Mr Prasenjit Mondal.

Of the judges, five will be posted to the new bench of Calcutta High Court at Jalpaiguri, which will start functioning soon.

With the appointment of more judges, it is hoped the number of pending cases, which had mounted to nearly three lakh, would be reduced.
