Woman succumbs to rat fever; panic strikes villagers
Madikeri, June 21 : The dreaded rat fever (Leptospirosis) has triggered off a panic wave among the people of Heggala village near Virajpet in this district of Karnataka, with a woman succumbing to the disease yesterday.
Reports received here said Pramila (28), who had been complaining of tiredness and vomiting for the last one week, was shifted to the Virajpet hospital. As the illness did not subside, she was shifted to a hospital at Tellicherry in Kerala, where she breathed her last yesterday.
The Kerala hospital had issued a certificate stating that she had died of rat fever.
Her two children, Nitish (eight) and Nirish (six) were also suffering from fever and their condition was stated to be serious.
Besides, a few more villagers were also suffering from symptoms of the disease and were being treated at a hospital.
Village Panchayath member Appachanda Mahesh urged the district health authorities to initiate preventive measures immediately to stop the spread of the disease.
