ULFA-Centre talks tomorrow

Guwahati, June 21 (UNI) The ULFA nominated Peoples Consultative Group (PCG) today left for New Delhi for their third and possibly the last meeting to find an early solution to the insurgency problem, which has been plaguing Asom for past three decades.

Tomorrow's meeting, which came in the backdrop of a recent spurt in the outfit sponsored killings and bombings, will finalise ground work for direct talks between the outfit and the Centre. National Security Adviser M K Narayanan will lead the Centre's team during talks.

The Centre had declined the ULFA demand to release some of its jailed leaders as a precondition to direct talks. The demand may also figure during the meeting.

The PCG yesterday met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who assured full cooperation for the success of the peace process and extended his best wishes. He could not attend the meeting as he was indisposed.

According to PCG spokesman Arup Borbora, the Chief Minister was positive towards the peace process and assured that the State Government would play a ''positive role for the success of the peace process.'' He said the state government has a vital role to play for the peace process to succeed and the Chief Minister has assured to take all necessary steps to make the talks fruitful. ''He told us that because of his ill health, it would not be possible for him to attend the third round of meeting, but senior officials would be sent to attend the meeting on behalf of the State Government,'' Borbora said.
