Two arrested for assault on Panchayat President

Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, June 21 (UNI) Two persons were arrested here today for assaulting Iyengar Kulam Panchayat President Thangamani when he insisted Panchayat ward member Balasubramanian reutrn a television set belonging to the Panchayat.

Police said the incident occurred when Mr Thangamani asked for the Television set, to which Mr Balasubramanian replied that it was being repaired. Not satisfied with the reply, the Panchayat President ordered the ward member to bring the televison set to the Panchayat office immediately.

This resulted in a heated argument between the two. Enraged by Mr Thangamani's insistence, Mr Balasubramanian and his four sons, assaulted him with sticks and rods.

Mr Thangamani, who was urged, was admitted to the Government Hospital here.

Efforts were on to nab Mr Balasubramian and his two sons, as two other sons involved in the assault were arrested.

A case has been registered and an investigation was underway, police added.
