Security beefed up for Ambubachi mela at Kamakhya temple

Guwahati, Jun 21 (UNI) Security continued to be a major factor as Asom prepares for the annual Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya temple from June 22.

The mela is expected to witness the convergence of tantriks, yogis and devout Hindus from across the world to this Shaktipeeth of Goddess Durga, perched atop the Nilachal Hills in the city.

The recent spate of bombings by the banned ULFA and threats reported in the media to religious places, including Kamakhya temple, has kept the authorities on tenterhooks.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nitul Gogoi informed that special security arrangements have been made for the Ambubachi mela.

''We are expecting devotees in large numbers this year than previous years and have made all preparations ready to ensure law and order during mela,'' he said.

Mr Gogoi informed that the mela premises and its vicinity have been divided into eight sectors to ensure better monitoring. A police control room has also been set up near the main temple, he added.

Besides deployment of additional forces to assist the regular security personnel in the temple, extra women personnel have also been deputed, he said.

The SSP informed that CRPF jawans would be engaged during the mela period.

Ambubachi Mela Parichalana Samity publicity secretary Chandan Sharma said besides the arrangements made by the police department, NCC cadets, Scouts and other volunteers would also be used in ensuring smooth conduct of the mela.

Traffic was also being regulated and special pass was being provided for entry to the temple premise.

A traffic constable at the site said vehicles without the pass would not be allowed to enter beyond a point and the order has already come into effect from yesterday.

SSP Gogoi said, ''Traffic would be monitored to ensure that no miscreants try to enter the temple premise and create disturbance during the mela.'' The mela had recorded about 4.5 lakh visitors last year and the figure was expected to go up significantly this year.
