Guwahati, June 21 (UNI) Special security arrangements have been made for the Ambubachi mela at Kamakhya temple starting from tomorrow,in view of recent spate of bombing by the banned ULFA.

The mela is expected to witness the convergence of tantriks, yogis and devout Hindus from across the world to this Shaktipeeth of Goddess Durga, perched atop the Nilachal Hills in the city.

Recent spate of bombing by the banned ULFA and threats reported in the media to religious places, including Kamakhya temple, has kept the authorities on tenterhooks.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nitul Gogoi said ''We are expecting devotees in large numbers this year than previous years and have made all preparations to ensure law and order during mela.'' Mr Gogoi said the mela premises and its vicinity have been divided into eight sectors to ensure better monitoring. A police control room has also been set up near the main temple.

Besides deployment of additional forces to assist the regular security personnel in the temple, extra women personnel have also been deputed, he added.

The SSP informed that CRPF jawans would be engaged during the mela period.

Ambubachi Mela Parichalana Samity publicity secretary Chandan Sharma said besides the arrangements made by the police department, NCC cadets, Scouts and other volunteers would also be used in ensuring smooth conduct of the mela.

SSP Gogoi said, ''Traffic would be monitored to ensure that no miscreants enter the temple premise and create disturbance during the mela.'' The mela had recorded about 4.5 lakh pilgrims last year and this year figure is expected to go up significantly.
