Reservations based on economic status not viable: NCP
Mumbai, June 21 (UNI) The NCP today opposed Shiv Sena's stand of reservations, based on economic status of people.
Commenting on Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's views that reservations should be based on economic status and not caste, NCP spokesman Dr Ratnakar Mahajan said the stand was ''misleading''.
He also criticised the viewpoint that - caste based reservations led to division of Hindu society. ''In many places, dalits are still not allowed to pray or enter temples. How can this be explained,'' he asked.
Caste - based reservations was a must to bring equality in the society and provide opportunity to the backward classes.
When asked about senior NCP leader Shalini Patil's stiff opposition to reservations, he said party's stand was clear on its support to the issue.
