New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) A day after thick clouds and slight rain brought about a drop in mercury in the capital, a relatively clear day with periods of bright sunlight today led to a rise in maximum temperature to 39 Degree Celsius.

Though the temperature remained at a normal level, the sunlight interspersed with coudy intervals, together with a high humidity level of nearly 40 per cent, led to perspiring conditions in the capital.

Some relief, however, continued to be provided by easterly winds which have been blowing through the capital since Monday evening.

A heavily overcast sky and rains on Monday evening and yesterday had brought about a coolness in the weather. The thick clouds led to a sharp drop in mercury to 37.1 Degree Celsius yesterday, about two degrees below normal.

Light rains were also witnessed in the evening though weathermen said they were only traces (less than 0.1 mm) The weather office has, however, refuted the possibility of the fresh spell of rains being pre-monsoon showers.

Rather, they attribute the turnaround in the weather since early this week to localised weather phenomenon like a fresh upper air cyclonic movement.

Though today saw the return of sultry conditions, it may wtill be while before the return of scorching heat wave that characterised the weather in the second week of June.

The weather office have forecast a partly cloudy sky with possibility of light rains and thundershowers, accompanied by squall, in the capital during the next 24 hours.

The maximum temperature tomorrow is also expected to be 39 degree C, they said.
