Lightning toll reaches 42 in Marathwada

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, June 21 (UNI) The death toll due to lightning reached 42 in Marathwada, with eight more deaths reported during the fifth day today, as rains continued to lash central Maharashtra.

According to official sources at divisional commissionerate here today, 42 people were killed due to lightning in seven of the eight districts of Marathwada region, in the last five consecutive days.

Latur, with highest number of deaths, registered 13 deaths, followed by Beed (8), Aurangabad (7), Jalna (7), Parbhani (3), Osmanabad and Nanded (2 each).

The rainfall figures from the region, in last 24 hours today indicated that the region has received light to moderate rainfall as compared to moderate to heavy rainfall in the earlier days.

As per today's rainfall figures in Marathwada, Jalna recorded highest rainfall of 9.5 mm in the last 24 hours followed by Beed (8.5 mm), Aurangabd (6.9 mm), Parbhani (5.7 mm), Osmanabad (1.8 mm), Hingoli (1.3) mm and Nanded (0.1 mm).

Latur, which had recorded heavy rainfall till yesterday, recorded no rainfall on the fifth day today.
