Kumaraswamy to ensure Ministers take oath in Kannada in future

Bangalore, June 21: Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today assured the Legislative Council that he would ask the Ministers to henceforth take oath in Kannada.

Replying to a special mention raised by 'Mukhya Manthri' Chandru (BJP), he referred to the oath taking by Minister Jameer Ahmad Khan (JD-S) in English earlier in the day and said he had the right to take oath in any language he preferred.

This statement drew opposition from Mr Chandru and the Opposition Congress members, who demanded that the new Minister should either take oath in Kannada or quit.

Mr Chandru said Mr Khan should have respected the supremacy of Kannada, the administrative language of the State.

Mr M P Nadagouda (JD-U) said taking oath in the name of persons and Gods violated the Constitutional norms.
