New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) With cities like Delhi and Bangalore reaching the saturation point, the 30 billion dollar Information Technology (IT) industry is now targetting new hubs in cities including Chandigarh, Kanpur and Lucknow.

''While Kolkata is developing fast, the industry is also looking at cities like Bhubaneshwar, Patna and Siliguri in the Eastern region, Chandigarh, Kanpur, Dehradun and Lucknow in the North, Nagpur in the West and Coimbatore and Kochi in the South,'' said National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) President Kiran Karnik while talking to reporters today.

However, he also added that infrastructure like international air connectivity, road transport and power has to be developed in these places. ''Many of the cities do not yet have the right kind of infrastructure, but there is great potential for development,'' he stressed.

Focusing on Kolkata as an example of how environment of cities can be developed to make it friendly for the IT industry, he said,'' Whenever people ask me how to bring the IT industry to the state, I give the example of Kolkata and the role played by the state government in it''.

Mr Karnik also pointed out that after the opening of Nathula on July 6, Siliguri has the potential of turning into a major IT hub, as besides being the gateway to the North East, it will also become one of the gateways to South East Asia.

''However we need to plan ahead so that we can develop cities like these three years down the line,'' he added.

Asked about the other facilities that these cities needed, he talked about medical facilities and education facilities for the children who would work there and entertainment facilities.
