Mumbai, June 21 (UNI) Environment pollution is a challenge before the dyestuff industry, according to Secretary of Chemicals and Petrochemicals Ms Satwant Reddy.

Addressing the 56th Annual General Meeting of the Dyestuffs Manufacturers'Associaton of India (DMAI) held here today, she said, ''Dyestuff is one of the high polluting industries. Dyestuff industry should implement the suggestions given in the Charter of Corporate responsibility for environmental protection. The issue of protecting the environment is of major concern the world over. We must address all the concerns and ensure a cleaner environment.

India is also signatory to Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Our industry is a significant producer and exporter of scheduled chemicals. Declaration and verification are the important aspects for the implementation of the convention. We are required to file annual declarations for units handling scheduled chemicals, DOC including PSF chemicals. Since several dyes and dye intermediates contain sulphur, phosphorous and fluorine, these units will require to file declaration with the Government for onward submission to OPCW.

She further said, her department has orgnaised awareness programmes in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Hyderabad and other parts of the country. I hoped that DMAI members are taking use of these awareness workshops. The CWC Act has come into force and I advise DMAI members to file declaration as required under the act to avoid penal action. India is also signatory to Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management (SAICM) which was adopted in February 2006. SAICM is a voluntary initiative under which management of chemicals from cradle to grave is to be done in a proper manner and this is to be achieved by 2020,'' she added.
