Lucknow, Jun 21: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh today demanded intervention of President A P J Abdul Kalam to probe the Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal in which former minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir had been arrested yesterday.

''The case demanded an impartial enquiry as the arrested Congress leader was close to Ms Sonia Gandhi and was seen during the Rae Bareli Parliamentary bypoll,'' state BJP President Kesari Nath Tripathi told reporters here.

Since the issue involved persons from the ruling party, the CBI would not be able to conduct enquiry which should be done by some other agnecy or committee, he said. ''We request Dr Kalam to intervene in the matter to spell out probe mechanism in the scandal,''he said.

Coming down heavily on the misrule of Mulayam Singh Yadav government in UP, the BJP chief said people of the state were an aggrieved lot and were definitely looking for change. The cadre of Bahujan Samaj Party was also feeling suffocated there and many of its leaders were coming to BJP, he claimed.

Mr Triapthi was critical of the proposed move of Samajwadi Party President Mulayam Singh Yadav to observe June 25 as 'the day for the victims of emergency,' ''Mr Yadav has no moral grounds to do this as his party is extending support to the Congress at the Centre,'' he said.
