Soma Enterprises completes Koyna Dam strengthening ahead of schedule

Mumbai, June 20 (UNI) Infrastructure major Soma Enterprises Ltd today announced the completion of strengthening of Koyna dam in Maharashtra in a record time of 21 months, three months ahead of schedule.

The work required very high technical skill, huge mobilisation, meticulous planning and round-the-clock execution, a Soma Enterprises release said.

The Maharashtra Government presented an award of Excellence to the company's Chairman and Managing Director Rajendra Prasad Maganti for this achievement, it added.

The strengthening of the Koyna dam project was awarded to Soma Enterprises by the state government at a cost of Rs 94 crore.

The dam is the lifeline of Maharashtra as it accounts for two-thirds of the hydro-electric power capacity of the state.

Nestled in the western ghats of Maharashtra, the Koyna Dam (Shivaji Sagar Lake) in the state stimulates the highest rate and level of seismicity worldwide.

The dam had developed visible cracks after it was affected by the first major earthquake in 1967.
