Police seize arms and ammunition

Shillong, Jun 20 (UNI) Huge cache of ammunition belonging to an unidentified militant outfit were seized by Meghalaya police from Umkhirmi village in Asom following a fierce encounter late last night.

Police today suspected that some of the militants might have also been injured during the encounter.

Police said the seizure included one AK-47 rifle, one Chinese rifle, two Chinese made grenades, three AK magazines, 68 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition and one camera.

Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, H Nongpluh said the seizure took place following a fierce gunfight with the unidentified militants at Umkhirmi village inside Asom.

Mr Nongpluh said the state police had already informed the Asom police on the incident and to identify the militant group.

The police official said, the gun battle which took place in two areas - Umkhirmi village, Asom and Saba village, Meghalaya lasted for many hours, which led the band of armed militant to bow down to intense police firing pressure.

Intelligence sources said the militants could be either the cadres of the Karbi National Volunteers or United People's Democratic Solidarity. Both the outfits were currently on a ceasefire agreement with the Centre.
