Aizawl, June 20 (UNI) Mizo handlooms and handicrafts, which have not dwindled into trite imitations or lost their traditional resplendence, is now all set to carve a niche for itself in the internationl markets.

With the help of Textile Ministry, Mizoram has chalked out a three-year vision plan for the global recognition of the elegant and ethnic Mizo 'paun' skirts, shawls, backpacks, wall hangings and various other items skillfully inter-woven with intricate designs since time immemorial.

''Special handloom and handicraft training programmes will be organised this year across the region to give a facelift to all the handloom and handicrafts' work of craftspersons,'' Assistant Director Sahadev Singh, office of the development commissioner (handicrafts) told UNI.

He further added saying the six-month training programme would be conducted under the supervision of design experts worldwide where they could provide local artisans the vital formula for upgrading their skills by teaching them latest technologies used in designing the handloom products.

Unlike other states, NE handloom products are unexplored to the rest of the countries due to the lack of expertise to the weavers, who are unaware of the current trend. Mr Singh also explained that the training programme would help the weavers to explore their products into international market.

Mr Singh also ensured an awareness campaign regarding this through various NGOs, district magistrates, industry department, rural development officials and village councils.
