Medical report on Maudhani's health sent to TN govt

Coimbatore, June 20 : Coimbatore Medical College Hospital Dean Dr Kalanidhi has sent the health reports by medical experts, who had examined Coimbtore serial bomb blasts under trial and founder leader of People's Democratic Party (PDP) Abdul Nasser Maudhani, to the Director of Medical Education (DME), Chennai.

Talking to UNI here today, Dr Kalanidhi said the specialists, including a diabetologist, neurologist, cardiologist and an ortho from the CMC hospital here and four from physical, medical and Ayurvedic departments of Chenai, visited the central prison here and examined Maudhani for more than two hours yesterday.

Dr Kalanidhi said he had received the reports from the specialists and forwarded them to Chennai.

They would proceed further following direction from the Tamil Nadu government, he added.

To a question whether they had any plan to provide treatment to him here amid tight security, Dr Kalanidhi said it was up to the state government to decide.

It is up to the state government to decide whether Maudhani should be provided medical treatment in the prison itself or in any hospital, he said.

It may be recalled that Maudhani has been lodged in the prison as an undertrial since 1998 along with 165 other accused in the serial bomb blast case. He was suffering from diabetes. He is moving around on an artificial limb, which was fitted prior to his arrest on March 31, 1998. Maudhani's counsel has been seeking bail so that the PDP leader can be given Ayurvedic treatment in Kerala and his artificial limb could be replaced.

Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, during his recent visit to Chennai, urged his Tamil Nadu counterpart M Karunanidhi that Maudhani be given bail and medical aid on humanitarian grounds.

Following this, the Tamil Nadu government agreed to provide treatment to him.

Accordingly, they had sent the team of specialists to the prison to assess Maudhani's health condition.
