Five killed in rain-related mishaps

Chennai, June 20 (UNI) Five people were killed and two others injured in two rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu in the wee hours today.

A report from Vellore said two people were killed and two injured when gelatine sticks stored at a hut near a stone quarry exploded.

The incident occurred at Durapadi area in Vellore Taluk.

The deceased, Duraisamy (37) and Saroja (30), quarry workers, were charred to death in the explosion, which occurred after a high tension wire snapped and fell on the hut in gusty winds and rains.

The injured were admitted to Vellore Medical College Hospital.

In the other incident, three members of a family were killed in a wall collapse due to heavy rains in Cuddalore district.

Police identified the deceased as E Anjalai (45), her daughter-in-law Selvi (24) and Selvi's son Saranraj (18 months).

The victims were sleeping in their house when the wall collapsed due to heavy rainfall, which lashed the district last night.

The bodies were sent to Cuddalore Government Hospital for autopsy.
