Doctrove named Dominica's goodwill ambassador

Roseau, Dominica (UNI) ICC's Elite panel of umpires member Billy Doctrove has been named the goodwill ambassador of Dominica by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit here.

''The government thought that it was appropriate to appoint him as a goodwill ambassador to Dominica,'' Mr Skerrit was quoted by the Caribbean Media Communication as saying after presenting Doctrove with his diplomatic passport.

''Mr Doctrove has certainly been very successful as a cricket umpire and he is the most successful umpire we have had in Dominica's history,'' he added.

The 50-year-old was Dominica's first FIFA referee and officiated in a World Cup qualifier in 1996 before switching to cricket umpiring.

''We felt that in an attempt to recognize his talent, his contribution and his achievement we need to allow him to courtesy of being able to travel throughout the region and indeed the world with greater ease,'' the Dominican Prime Minister said praising the local star.

Meanwhile, Doctrove said he felt honoured by the appointment.

''This occasion is a very momentous one for me. It's a very emotional one for me and I just want to take this opportunity thank the government of Dominica for making this presentation of a diplomatic passport to me and endorsing me as an ambassador of this country,'' Doctrove said.
