Sensex crosses 10,000 level, shuts at 9,997.84

Mumbai, June 19: Even as the BSE Sensex today crossed the 10,000 level after days of being below the five-digit mark, it jumped 113.33 points in the intra-day trade today to close at 9,997.84 on strong buying sentimens that surged only at the dying half-an-hour.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) crossed the 10,000 level and went on to touch 10,049.94. This is the third consecutive day gain on the benchmark index.

The S&P CNX Nifty gained 27 points or 0.92 per cent to close at 2,916.90 points.

Earlier, the BSE Sensex opened in the green, up by 20 points at 9,903. Further, the buying in small-cap and mid-cap stocks added strength to the market breadth which had slowed over the past few weeks, on the back of a global meltdown.

The BSE mid-cap index rose 2.34 per cent while the BSE small-cap index rose 2.42 per cent.

On the BSE Sensex, the major gainers were - Cipla, up by 6.25 per cent to Rs 223.50; Tata Motors by 6.12 per cent to Rs 770; ACC by 5.20 per cent to Rs 770.90; BHEL by 3.82 per cent to Rs 1,955 and NTPC by 3.47 per cent to Rs 113.25.
