Peasant's son bags overseas scholarship

New Delhi, June 19 (UNI) Close on the heels of a vendor's son topping the Orissa JEE examination, a peasant's son has secured overseas scholarship to pursue post-doctoral research.

Dr Jayanti Kumar Sahu, 35, who belongs to a landless agricultural labourer's family in Orissa, has secured the scholarship to undertake research, according to an official release.

The scholarship has been granted to Dr Sahu by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment under the National Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Castes, the release added.

The Ministry will bear Rs 15 lakh to 20 lakh during the one to one-and-a-half years of post-doctoral research and this will include full fee, maintenance allowance of 5,200 pounds per annum, air fare, contingency expenditure of 400 pounds per annum, medical insurance premium, equipment allowance and local travel costs.

Dr Sahu, who has a PhD in Botany from Utkal University, will undertake post-doctoral research at the Institute of Biophysics, Biological Research Center in Hungary. He has already published research papers in various national and international magazines and is currently working in a college in Bargarh in Orissa.
